genetics behind Lemon Blue Cochin

Thanks! I was looking and looking...
Barring is a gene that works on its own, If your roo is Homozygous Barred, then all of his offspring should be barred and if *he is Heterozygous Barred then half and half of both sexes would be barred. It won't have any correlation with whether or not some of them got the Brown Red pattern.

Again, thanks. *He is.

And that was breeding to non barred hens as you said you were, when you breed him to barred hens, then all of the males will be barred and the females will be half and half barred and non barred.

Good luck

Yes. Lemon blue pair. Your roo looks a lot like mine. and I think your hen has a wonderful glow about her -- I think she's really pretty. I would love to get a hen like her to go with my rooster. Thanks for sharing your pictures.

I took those photos right after I got them. Since I picked them up at auction, I have no history on them at all. They have been in a coop now for a couple of weeks and he does seem to be darkening up a little. I don't know that he will ever be the vibrant red that she is. I guess only time will tell. I can't wait to see what they produce for me. It is so hot here so she hasn't been laying very well ( none of my birds have ) so I only have two eggs from her in the incubator. I hope she starts laying again because I have a friend that I want to send some eggs to as a surprise along with her other eggs that she has been waiting ever so patiently for. ( Hope she doesn't read this LOL ).
So if the Rooster doesn't darken up, does that mean he is not a true Lemon Blue? What color would he be classified then and what would he produce with that hen?

Your hen does but the roo needs the same color like the hen. Has he been in the sun alot ?

Ether that or the rooster has silver in it.
For example --
If the father was (Gold Based) like a Blue Red or a Lemon Blue and the mother was (Silver Based) like a Birchen then the cockerels/ roosters out of that cross would have a "Yellow" cast to the parts that should be Red/ Gold.

He looks like a sunburned splash to me, although a photo that showed his whole body rather than such a closeup might change my opinion to sunburned blue.

I agree, he looks sunburned blue or splash.

We took a quick trip home to SC and I brought home the birchen hen from my Dad. I'm going to give her a couple of weeks to settle in and get used to her new home and then see if I can breed her with my Lemon Blue roo. I hope I can get some pullets who arebrown red or lemon blue, so I can get started with this Lemon Blue project. Thanks everyone for the advice. I'll try to keep some updates with the progress.
