Hello!
I am about to get my first flock and I have narrowed it down I think to all Wyandotte's. I want some of each color or I could be convinced to get all of one color so I know what I am getting. My goal is sustainability, I want to allow them to breed once a year or so. If I get all blue laced red, and a rooster of the same type, what will they look like? I am having a hard time with the genetics part of this in regards to blue. Also, gold laced or silver laced, if I get rooster and hen of all this type? ....or mix silver and gold? Or if I a mix of blue, blue laced, gold, silver... what color of rooster would be ideal to create a beautiful flock over many generations? From the genetics info I see, it looks like anything blue will only be at best 50% blue but not seeing too much about mixing or the other colors.

editing to add lavender wyandottes to this question, I have a choice of these too. Looking specifically at Hoover Hatchery right now but may go elsewhere. Right now this is the list I am using for availability.

Blue laced Red x Blue Laced Red = 25% Black laced Red, 50% blue laced Red, 25% splash laced Red.

This would be a pretty flock to maintain and then you would be picking which hens and roosters to cross based on what color combo is your favorite.

I wouldn't cross either of these colors to the blue laced red, I don't know how this would mix.

But, if you wanted a fun sexlinked cross, get a Gold laced rooster and put him over Silver Laced hens and you will get gold laced pullets and split gold/silver laced males. You should see red / gold down at hatch on the girls and silver / grey down on the boys.

If you're doing laced x laced, they will all be laced, if you don't mind deviating from standard colors, it's your flock and sometimes mixes really turn out gorgeously!

Lavender is a recessive color, it takes 2 copies to show so it will breed like a solid black chicken for the first generation. Crossing this to a laced chicken, you will not see any lacing that first generation either.

hmm so laced x laced = laced. I like this! I think the blue laced red combo could be gorgeous as well with the results, it would be a lot of fun! so much to think about!!

With lavender, wouldn't the chicks I get from the hatchery already have so many generations of lavender? Or are they making them as first copies every time to be guaranteed? not sure how this works in the business.

They would be lavender x lavender for many generations.

Sorry what I meant was, if you took a lavender and bred it to say a silver laced, the lavender would act like breeding a solid black bird to the silver laced. I don't know what this would look like but I would expect a solid black bird, maybe some sort of leakage.
