Getting a German Shepard puppy for Christmas, I need help finding a

And do you have any PICTURES of the great dane sleeping with the chickens? I don't suppose anyone on this site would like to see THAT . . . .

If you want to go with a German name, what about Gretchen?
The three GSDs next to us are/were Tubby, Merecedes and Trooper.

I had a reg. GSD her name was KyraAnne, she was a great dog. R.I.P. KyraAnne. Her reg. name was Cindarella. Congrats on getting a great dog.

I got my puppy..she is so beautiful..and sweet..I am thinking of calling her Saydee Ann..her mothers name is ginger and the fathers name is Isaac. Her mother is a sable GS and the father is black and tan..they are both registered..I am finding out that Saydee is a common name for dogs around here..so I will probably change it..I want to see what her family names have been. I do not have a pic of our great dane sleeping with the chickens, but as soon as I can get one I will post it. Bettyr you have a great idea on potty training. I want the pup in the house, now I have some advice I can work with.Thanks. I haven't had a little puppy like this in 18 to 20 years. I want to train her..but I need to learn how..I know they are very smart dogs. The puppy is dark in color, she has black, tan, and sable, very pretty marked. My son still has my camera from his trip to California. I told him last night I need it back to get pics. So hopefully he will hurry up and get his picks off of it or at least bring it back so I can take some pics..KIDS!!! I have enjoyed reading all of the replys and advice, thanks every one. Pics will come as soon as I can get John to bring back my camera.

Growing up we had a crossbred GS/Great Dane that we called Shep. Funny thing was even though he sounded fierce he was a big chicken. Then we got a purebred GS, 2nd generation American bred. His father's registered name was King Tuffy III and his mother's was Lady Hagar, so we wound up registering him as Rex of Hagar, and we called him Rex. Great dog and very protective of the family. He was the runt of his litter, but when he was full grown he was 28 inches at the shoulder and 155 lbs of silver grey shepherd.

When I lived in California, I rescued a litter of pups that had been abandoned by their mother(who apparently was a loose woman with her favors) One pup was hound/GSD, one was Collie/GSD, those were the boys and the two girls were Dobie/GSD and the last was my Gretchen who was all GSD. She was my buddy and went almost everywhere with me, except to work.

One thing we learned when training Rex, was that GSD hate the word Phooie. I guess it's the sound, and when they do something that they shouldn't or get into something they shouldn't we used that word and they stopped whatever they were doing and paid attention to us.

My GSD is also named Rex and he's pretty famous here on BYC. Will sleep with a box of baby chicks and ducks and won't let any of the other pets near them. Chases and barks at hawks. Patrols property night and day and doesn't let any of the predators in HIS yard and we are surrounded by thousands of acres of woods so he has his job cut out for him.

I was so impressed with the breed that I've recently gotten another GSD puppy, Scarlett, so that she can learn from the Master. So far she has a lot to learn. Runs for house if Rex starts barking at something but she's only 8 months old.

One thing about GSD's is that they are very smart but more so, very, very energetic. That puppy will need lots and lots of exercise. I mean hours of chasing balls, fresbies, swimming. It will also need lots and lots of social interaction - take it everywhere so it learns to love and trust all people - unless you want a real guard dog that may take someone's arm off - like the UPS guy. I didn't want that so I took Rex on trips with us and into town, same with Scarlett. Now they run up to every stranger wanting to play.

Best of luck with your new GSD puppy - If properly trained and socialized, they are the best of the breeds in my humble opinion.

You are the envy of me right now!

I love German Shepherds; I have always wanted one, and I still want one! lol.

I did adopt a GSD mix... her name is Sabina (which is a German name except in German it is spelled Sabine, but still pronounced with an "a" sound at the end)... anyways, Grete/Greta/Gretta is also a pretty name...

Good luck with her! I can't wait to see pics!
