Getting a Great Dane... *He is home now*

ohhhh your dane looks like a rescue I had years ago, her name was Tara, I got her as a 5yr old, she had spent her life chained on cement. She was so sweet, went everywhere with me in the car, her head hit the ceiling! Later, I got one as a puppy, a Boston. She also was the goofiest sweetest thing, youll enjoy this dog, she came to you for a reason!

Aw, what a sweet-looking boy!

Congrats on the new (not so)baby! I just got two pups last weekend.I've admired them forever, but I've always had working dogs.Search,protection,detection.... Shepherds,Malinios, and Pitbulls. So these guys are a new experience for me.Hubby has wanted them forever and never really had the time or room until now,so part of our Valentines presents were these guys. One boy one girl. I have already fallen in love with them, even though I already knew from clinic experience the problems they may encounter. even though I'm sure you've done your homework...Some of the issues we saw in the clinic that Danes are prone too are :DILATED CARDIOMYOPATHY and BLOAT(which is pretty severe and can lead to Torsion or twisted gut)...also Dysplasia,Wobblers,HOD.Pano,Hypothyroidism,Various Cancers, and OCD(not obcessive compulsive...lol).... He's already grown,so you won't have to worry about the OCD,Pano, and HOD as they are primarily puppy disorders between 4 and 12 mos....Just love him,and let him know you'll never hurt him...

Congrats Marebear & family!! You guys will love him. We have had our Dane girl, Charlemagne, since she was a pup and she just celebrated her 12th birthday!!

So your guy may just be middle aged.

Two years ago on Christmas eve we got a call from our local rescue group asking us to go pick up two Danes that people had left tied to the front trees when they were evicted. We skipped church and drove right over to find a very skinny, young, male and female black Great Dane tied to the trees as reported.

We loaded them in the car and took them home, they were super sweet and we started slowing feeding them back to their proper weight....however, it soon became apparent all of the females food was going right to her middle, so we started her on calcium and extra vitamins and sure enough two weeks after we picked her up she gave birth to 11 Great Dane puppies!!!! They all made it fine. We supplemented them with goats milk and they all did great. Boy, it was a crazy time with our own two Great Danes, plus the mom & dad and then 11 puppies, we had 15 Great Danes at our house

That was two years ago and they have all since been spayed/neutered and adopted out to wonderful families...even the parents, however it is an experience that I will not soon forget!! Since I had always done dog rescue I had never had a litter of pups born at our house, or even helped with any being born....boy, was that an experience in itself!!

So, without wonderful people like you and the family willing to adopt I would still be here with 11 two-year-old Danes....oh my and I thought the puppies were alot of work!!!

Enjoy him, I know he will bring a lot of happiness to your family!

WOW!!! That many danes in the house would really be a handful!!

Our Blue Dane is absolutely wonderful! She hogs the couch and sleeps with us in the bed (king size and twin bed pushed together.... It is still very crowded!). We see ALOT of dogs at our place but the dane is really a special breed. Their eyes are expressive and they can be playful or very gentle. We always have Taste of the Wild kibble availble for our dane and we also feed RAW. She gets alot of excersize and she stays lean and fit. Good luck!
