Getting a male Cochin chick, how do I raise it properly so he doesn’t get aggressive?

I hatch out a lot of chicks every year and usually around 50% will be males. When the males start to crow I move them to bachelor coops and pens. I keep a couple of the best and sell the rest.

I keep RIR roosters with my hens but I did not handle them when they were growing. If you are stand-offish with the rooster but interact with the hens he usually accepts you as a hen and leaves you be. So I am a full grown man who happens to be a hen in my three roosters eyes.

Oh interesting. I had heard that your rooster thinking you were a hen would be bad, as the will boss you around and peck you if you don’t listen, and you can’t really hold them? I could be wrong, as I’m new to roosters

I don’t even try to hold them unless they’re going to freezer camp. They don’t boss me around or anything. They let me collect my eggs and clean the coop.

Some of my roosters are raised to work around kids. They are often raised in small mixed sex groups where they are trained to come when called. My handling is generally limited to touching their sides with back of my hand and having them perch on my hand / arm / shoulder. They are also habituated to be gently picked up by body with legs dangling. I also effort to move slowly and deliberately to avoid scaring them.

There can be an issue where apparent aggression stems from going after food which is easy fix.

Most of the birds I use are fighting chickens because they tame and train quickly. The other option (American Dominiques) are too heavy for smaller kids.
