we have 4 horses, i used to board for people but found it hard when people stopped paying board when "they" couldn't aford them any more, the horse market is really bad, to bad you don't live closer, we have a really nice chestnut colt away due to our boarder not paying us, i also once drove alnight to pick up a "free horse" best thing i ever did. found her on freecycle.org

Yes, it's really nice horses people are giving away around here. Nothing really wrong with most of them, other than their people just can't afford them anymore. Our area has lost a lot of good jobs over the past couple years. I think that has a lot to do with it. The trader's guide and craigslist is just flooded with horses for cheap, but after most of them don't sell, some people just have to get rid of them. This is making the rescues pretty busy too. These people had another TW gelding they were giving away, but I couldn't take him--he was beyond my experience, too many vices. I am bummed I didn't get this one. I even had dreams about him!

But it won't be long before another opportunity comes up. You just gotta know who to ask!

I would board too, or ask my neighbor if I could pasture my horse with his 2 rescues for awhile, but we had one we kept for a friend and inevitably something will happen. I don't like the liability for it, and also like you said Fowler_chick, people don't keep up their end of the deal. I had to constantly remind her that it was her turn to buy the grain (and we cut our own hay, so she got that free anyway). Too much trouble!
