Getting a puppy AKC registered?

Sorry about the "grump" in my post. Seems b***h is a forbidden word. AKC monitoring of puppy mills is far from good but at least they are making sure some minimum standards are met which is better than before. Wolf tracks is right on about good breeders rarely making money, my friend gets top dollar for her pups and always has a waiting list but she doesn't break even. She originally had a business but after 5 years her accountant told her she had to dissolve it because she couldn't keep filing IRS returns with loses.

Ga Chicken Mom Wrote: No, not all breeders sell full registration dogs for extra money. My friend/breeder sells pet quality with limited registration. Show quality grump are sold at a higher price on full registration with her co-owning so she has control if and when the grump is bred and to what stud dog. She has been breeding Dobes for 40+ years and this is her life's work - to breed the perfect Dobe. Her dogs live in her house, the girls whelp in her master bathroom and she sleeps on the floor to be near the dam and puppies for at least 2 weeks. I think raising and breeding dogs in wire cages is the same, if not worse than the chicken factory farms. Just my opinion. If you want a pedigreed pup, research the breed, find a breeder who belongs to the national breed club, visit their home to meet the dam, see the puppies and older dogs and ask plenty of questions.

If you raise dogs on the right kind of wire I can guarantee you won't be able to tell. I know this because my puppies are all over the US and no one has complained. I also know several show dogs that were raised on wire. Wire keeps the dog clean and has give to help keep the dogs joints from getting sore unlike concrete which causes all kinds of problems.

I agree with you. I wouldn't even take a second glance at a so called "breeder" who raises their pups on wire. When I was looking for a gr breeder, it seems that the only breeders who do the ofa/cerf/pennhip certifications are registered by the akc. I wouldn't even go near a breeder who doesn't do those certifications on their dogs. When I was looking for a breeder I came across a couple "breeders" who were breeding dysplastic dogs.

THIS. It's called an unregistrable dog of a registrable breed. And you have to pay money and take all kinds of pics and prove the dog has been fixed. Then you can participate in field trials and agility/obedience. I had a cocker spaniel AGES ago that we did this with. Neither parents were registered but the AKC makes allowance for this sort of thing if folks want to participate in their shows.

I apologize if this has been covered.

So now that she can't claim it as a business since she kept taking losses for 5 years is she paying taxes on the puppies she sells now?

I cant see how a breeder doesnt make ANY money on their pups...
No way i believe that... sorry.

When I was breeding I was state and AKC inspected and raised my puppies and dogs on wire. The AKC inspector told me I had one of the nicest AKC records and kennel she had seen. She even gave me a certificate that very few breeders get. In fact I was the first in the state of Mo. to get it.

If they do proper testing, vaccinations and registration along with feeding a good quality diet and proper housing and such then breeders take a loss. Throwing a couple dogs together in the back yard and raising them in your garage doesn't cost a whole lot, but breeders who breed for improvement of their breed, who take the time to show and are SERIOUS about their dogs don't make a profit. Most dont break even.
