getting a texas pulloum- typhoid certificate

i live along the coastol area of texas. before you can sell eggs, meat, and live chicks, your flock must be tested for pullorum-typhoid. i just had this done and can finally sell jersey giants from my home. you are also given a flock number.

remember that hefty fines follow if not inspected and certified, and get caught selling without this inspection. this program is governed by the state and nation, and inspection is free.

You actually can sell hatching eggs and chicks directly from your property without the PT certificate. You can't go to swap meets or shows without it. I spoke to the PT Program rep for my county and that's what I was told. I'm about to have the state do my PT testing.

Not sure if you need that for meat. What the health department told me about meat is that I had to have a designated, inspected, and licensed processing facility or alternatively I could have the birds processed at a licensed facility and then I'd have to get a retail license to sell the packaged meat.

What I can't figure out is how to get into the NPIP. It's not really clear.

Grayeyes, I live at the other end of the state from you in the Panhandle!!! Although I grew up in Wharton. Just now starting to look into the NPIP stuff as my friend is interested in us breeding and selling. Have you found any information? There is just not a lot out there! I am thinking my first step is e-mailing J Essier. What all have you done?

I just talked to the folks over at TVMDL. Here is what I found out:

Participation in the Texas PT program and getting a PT Certificate from the state is free.

If you are going to show, transport, or sell birds at places other than their place or origin (in other words, places other than your property), then you have to be registered with the TAHC.

If you want to participate in the NPIP Mr. Essler (listed on the TVMDL web site) can assist with that. Basically you have to get your Texas PT Certificate, then you have to send in 100.00 per year (this is NOT prorated) for July-June, and then you will get a NPIP number. I was told that if I wasn't shipping anything out of state that NPIP wasn't really necessary.

as far as i know this test is so that you can sell eggs and live poultry. I'm in the process now of trying too find the avian influenza testing through the fad so i can also sell meat without any problems. I will keep you posted when i find that info.
