My loving husband, who understands chicken math, ordered me the Brinsea Octogon 20 Advance EX incubator package. I am over the moon excited and have been browsing the egg sales. :) Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me, Happy Mother's Day to me, Happy Mother's Day to me....

okay, I am done with my singing!

So any suggestions on what I should order. I am really wanting some BCMs. I have many customers wanting those eggs and I think my Cuckoo Marans from MM hatchery are just not going to lay a dark enough egg.

Edited to fix my horrible typo. :) Excited fingers don't always hit the right keys!

what color? what breed? what sex? how many? where to put them? what to do with them?

Just a starter LIST

Congrats!!! That is such an exciting gift. I've been telling my husband I want an incubator for my birthday (in June). We will see if I'm as lucky as you!

I could not decide what breed I wanted to go with. Then I got two Welsummers and just adored the beautiful brown eggs. Then I started reading about Marans... I now have BCMs, wheaten Marans, and blue splash Marans. They are all so beautiful. In the 2-4 month category, so no eggs yet, but I'm so stinkin' excited. I just LOVE their eggs.

Sorry...couldn't resist. After doing a test hatch with local fertile "mutt" eggs, just to get the basics down, the next eggs I tried were BCM eggs. I too, love the dark eggs. Although they were shipped eggs, most developed and I do now have hens laying those lovely dark eggs. Be advised though, that BCM and Silkie eggs are among the most difficult to hatch so you may want to start with something easier to work out any kinks in your process.

Coturnix quail are fun to hatch. They only take 16 days and hatch so fast its referred to as "popcorn".

I am currently incubating some Royal Palm turkey eggs and a couple of muscovy duck eggs - it will be my first time with either species.
