I miss raising chickens. My husband & I’s financial situation & my pregnancy forced us to move back into town from our country home. I gave our flock to a friend who had room with his.

Hubby brought up the thought of raising chickens again. We raised our initial trio of hens in the city before moving to the country & expanding the flock.

This house has an old shed in the backyard that someone converted to a coop. It has a perch & nesting boxes. It has a small fenced area attached to it, & would only require minimal repair to be functional again.

The shed floor is concrete. The shed is approximately 6’ x 8’. The outdoor area is approximately 4-5’ x 8’, & about half of it is concrete as well.

Thoughts on keeping chickens on so much concrete? I’m also wondering if the space is sufficient. We’d only have 3-4 hens.

Thanks!

The space should be sufficient for a small flock. It'll be a little weird in terms of space division (more inside space than outside) but I don't see why that couldn't work as long as the chickens can access all the space.

As far as the concrete I'd just put down as much litter/bedding of your choice as possible, so they still get the satisfaction of being able to scratch and dig around.

Hi there! I’ve been there and done that! Life without the flock is simply not the same! We use straw inside of our coop, but it has a concrete floor, and outside of the coop it is a very long slab of concrete. It has never been an issue and we’ve had them there for over twelve years! Excited for you to get chickens once again! Best wishes!
