I try to refrain from posting on these type threads mostly because there are so many opinions that nothing good really ever comes from them.I'd like to throw my 2 pennies in if I may, this is a chicken forum, snakes eat chicks and or eggs therefore that makes them predators.I ask this for those that want the snake relocated, would you feel the same if you came to your run and could see your babies buldging from the belly of a snake. I understand that they do eat mice and rats and thats benificial, but hawks eat mice and rats as well should we relocate them too?

Sorry I got off topic for a moment,Continue to be the friend you have always been and she will see that she is hurting you, sadly its often easier to hurt the ones we are most comfortable being around.

I would not have killed the snake. It would have been easy enough to move. That being said snakes are not going to go extinct because a few are dispatched. I moved six rat snakes from inside and around my chicken pen this year. Yes I know it was different snakes because of different lengths and different wound patterns from my chickens. I did not move them to protect my flock or eggs I moved them to protect them. I turned a couple loose under my crawlspace to take place of my cat who recently got ran over.

Alot of people are saying that I shouldnt have killed this harmless snake. Did you read my whole post? There was a crowd with a bat ready to beat it to death or stab it with a shovel till it died of blood loss. It took me less than ten seconds to decapitate it.

So should I have let it be beat to death or was it ok for me to kill it quickly? Either way it was a dead snake slithering. I being the younger person in the party of 15 or so people was over ruled when I said that it was beneficial. So I know its easy to type " i wouldnt have killed the snake" but if you had been in my position you would have done the exact same thing because you would have had the exact same options as i did.

As for throwing the snake and how cruel it is - I have never seen a snake harmed by being hit by a car. Ever. I have seen them get hit then camp out in my backyard for a day or two before heading back out into the wild. Maybe we just have super snakes around here. All I see are people saying how cruel it was to get rid of it. The snake had few options once it showed itself, It would have been KILLED . Im sorry that the only way that the person could get rid of the snake was throwing it. Im pretty sure that there was no one there that knew about snake anatomy. These are WILD snakes people. Not the awesome snakes that becoem part of our family. These are one or two snakes out of a clutch of 50 or so. ( not sure how many eggs a snake has. that was the count from a rattler we found)

if I see a snake on my property - its dead. I have ducklings and ducks and eggs to protect as well as I dont want my dog stumbling across one.

Calm down people. The OP IS a Kid, (well teen to be exact-sorry to let your secret out goat walker

), and she was doing what she thought was right- a quick HUMANE death rather than letting a crowd with a baseball bat beat it to death. Which would you prefer??

I am not faulting anyone for killing a snake just saying I as in me would seek other alternatives. I have thought about the repercussions of relocating snakes too far from my property and I will not do that either. If I get overrun with rats and squirrels because the snakes don't take care of them I will lose many many more eggs and chicks than the snakes eat. That is just what works for me. What works for someone else is different. Although I would not mind everyone living in harmony with snakes I know it can't be and I accept that. I fault nobody.
