Getting Cayugas, first ducklings!

@Cayuga momma these guys are coming from Cackle hatchery, first batch of chicks I ordered was Meyer and I noticed in the first week that their barred rock chicks weren't bred very hardy, although all other chicks in batch were fine, it made me concerned as to their breeding stock(it wasn't any illness caught post arrival that I could see(no other birds died just some BRs) so i assume it was a genetic thing in the flock. So I looked up many a review board this time, and went whith Cackle. I'd buy from a breeder next time, but it was kinda a last minute desicion as I was originally ordering another batch of chicks lol.

I got my first Cayugas from Cackle. Sadly they didn't make the trip. Cackle was very helpful and compassionate, although they did admit that they had others who died and believed it was a disease. I was upset that they didn't let me or other know. I then ordered mine from mypetchicken. I am ordering from Cackle again. Im getting 2 WH, 1 Pekin, 1 Cayuga, and 1 SA in April.

My advice would be to check for pasty butt as soon as you get them.

When are yours coming?

@Cayuga momma ooh no! Well at least they came forth when asked, sounds like you'll have a colorful mix on you're hands soon :D they hatch this Monday on the 25th and my PO is very compassionate about any birds that they get in have owners contacted the moment the truck arrives! Babies should arrive this coming Wednesday by 6:30 am! But no joke, my mail lady once called me at 3am, 3-AM, like 'hey! your pigeons just arrived on truck, come take them home! Click*' As I blink my eyes open and be like 'well guess I have to get dressed...'

I love my USPS people too. When I told them I was expecting mine they called the truck driver from buffalo and he put them in his passenger seat so they would stay warm on the hour and a half drive to my post office. They are awesome.

Setting up the brooder! Also since its cold out and our brooders are in our unheated shop building how fast do ducklings grow in comparison to chicks? I have a rabbit cage I brood in that can house 15 chicks to 3 weeks fine and then I put them in the kiddie pool. Are ducklings faster growers? Should I just start all 8 in the kiddie pool off the bat? Or are they good to be in a smaller space for a bit? I prefer starting them in the rabbit cage cause I've coated it in plastic to prevent chill and contain more heat, but is space more important?

They are gonna grow pretty quickly. You can try out the rabbit cage, but have the kiddie pool prepared.
