getting chicks used to dogs

It's finally warming up and I've been giving our 4 week old chicks outside time and not letting our two dogs- a pekingese and a lab shepard mix- out. We tried it once and it freaked the socks off of them. Is it because they are so young? Or should we do little intros so they get used to the dogs? What have you all done?

It's good for chickens to fear dogs; most dogs love chicken, and birds need to be wary of predators. Are your dogs totally safe with the chicks? Very few are without serious training. Mary
