getting chicks! what should i use as bedding? [cheap]

Once the chicks are old enough....preferably out of the brooder....use straw.....it works well and when it gets wet in a certain spot you can just scoop it up and throw it outside in the compost

we use newspapers at first then after a few days switch to pine shavings

Straw just brings back too many bad memories from when I was a kid. Cleaning out the coop was a royal pain. Came out in huge block and had a horrific smell of ammonia. Granted we did not clean all that often, but I have been doing the DLM since this spring and so far have no smell and the litter is still loose enough to turn over.
