Does your neighborhood have an HOA? Or any covenants to follow, even if not an HOA? If so, you'll need to read those.
If you live in the city/town limits, then you need to look up info on their website. If you cannot find anything, then call. However, often the person on the other end of the phone will not know specifically or will make an assumption, or sometimes pass along their opinion (no chickens) as if it is fact. Have seen comments on BYC of all the above happening to various people. Is there a fb page for your area/neighborhood? You may find there is/has been a push for allowing chickens in your area and my find information this way.
If you live outside of the city/town limits, you may have to look at county rules or township rules. Sometimes, even in rural areas, you have to have so much land to have one thing or another. Sometimes, there are no specific rules.
Of course, BYC has state forums, and you can ask there. State thread links are pinned at the very top.
