Getting My Chicks Tomorrow and....

What's the temperment like on Polish? They're pretty flashy

The Polish are generally good natured, from what I've experienced. I have a few hatchery polish ranging in my yard. They don't see so well because of their poufy heads, but they'll make due.

I love to watch them because they do such goofy things sometimes!

Set up your brooder as soon as you can so you can fiddle with the lightbulb wattage and how low to hang it. Trust me you want to do this before you put the birds in. I also made two rubbermade clear tote brooders. WHy 2? because I had the lamp too low and melted a hole right through the bottom of one. I use a heat lamp from TSC, but I ended up using a regular 75 watt bulb, and adjusted how low it needed to keep a good temp and not cook the little critters. My big brooder I made out of plywood and scrap lumber I use clip lights, the kind they sell at hardware stores for construction. put a thermometer below the lamp and when you get between 95 and 100 in the center you should be good. Every week raise the light a little so they can adapt to lower temps. As for breeds, I have bantam cochins and they lay decent size eggs for such small birds, and they go through hardly any food. But I had one rooster that was a little high strung. The rooster I have now is a little more mellow. I say get what you like and fits your purpose.
