Getting peafowl- should I?

So my dad really wants peafowl and I would love to get some peachicks for his birthday but they are so expensive and I'm still young so I'm broke! We only have an acre of land which could be enough for a trio but should I get him some. I mean I would love to have my dad watching out the window at a parading peacock, but their feathers would probably get ruined or something. Does anyone have this problem? And plus I have no idea how to care for these things! What type of feed should I feed them? How much room do they need? What should I expect? Are they easy to raise like a young chicken? I just don't know if I should get them... :/

The first question is do you have close neighbors? Peacocks calls are really loud during breeding season, you should ask your neighbors if they are okay with it before you get some.

And no, they are different than chickens, there are many great threads in this forum about raising peachicks or adults, also about their nutrition.

Also, keep in mind that they will definitely not stay on your acre if they are free ranging...they will need a fully enclosed, predator-proof pen, providing at least 100 square feet per pea.

The birds are relatively inexpensive when you consider the cost of housing, feed, and medications. You can rack up a fair chunk of change in them pretty quick.

I mean do I have enough space for a trio at least? Should I get year olds to start? Or should I hatch them?

Do you have room to put up a 300 square foot area for them? Can your family afford a pen that large? Do you know how much noise a male makes during breeding season? Do you realize some males sound off 24 hours a day? Are your neighbors prepared to listen to a sound that can only be described as a woman screaming several times a night ?

I am asking all these questions because I lived near a guy breeding peacocks when I was in college. I could not stand all the noise. And I remember how all of the neighbors felt about his breeding hobby.....

I'll have to ask my neighbors which are a bit far from our house but close enough to hear things loud and clear. Maybe I shouldn't get peafowl... the peacocks train will probably get messy. I could build a pen but I don't know if I could build it that big. Well what if I just got a single peahen? Would it get lonely?
