getting permits to keep chickens

We don't need a permit, but your lot has to be a certain size and then there are no restrictions on how many you can have, in our old town they run loose in the streets, parks, sidewalks some people complain, I quess that would have to happen, is if your neighbors complained enough you may have a visit from animal control, but as of now we haven't had any problems.

I guess I didn't need to have a building inspection because Tom and Jerry were in a rabbit hutch that I put together by myself in a half hour...
Then Obelisk and Slifer were inside and then Penny so I guess the chicken room was okay even though one time Officer Curtin came by Slifer was parking in the dining room in front of the air conditioner, and watching Texas Justice...usually she'd crow and attack, but it must've been a good episode because she didn't budge...LOL

Finally...I have secured all the signatures I need for my permit. The health department said they would mail it to me this week!!
I am so glad to have it all done, I really didn't expect it to be such a big deal.
When I went to the building department they wanted to know exactly where in the yard it would be.
I mean exactly, they printed out an arial view of the property and asked me to point out where I wanted to put it.I had an idea where about it would go but I told him I didn't want to be locked in to a foot by foot location like they were asking.
The guy finally gave in and told me to just pick a general area and he marked that and filed it.
They never asked me what size the coop would be though, they did suggest buying a shed so they have to figure it will be around that size. Thats fine with me because I want something a little large.
The animal control officer asked me how many chickens I planned on having because he has to write it on the permit.
I said I have eggs coming and I have no idea how many will hatch but I want more than a few,so he wrote down 20 max.He said he had to write down something.
I doubt he will actually count them all when he visits every year.
I wonder if those permits can be modified later on to a larger number if they see that you are taking good care of them and there have been no complaints.
It sounds like the area I live in makes it harder to get these permits.
I just want to make sure I do everything right so they can't make me get rid of them later. I would be so heartbroken if that ever happened.
I am so happy that we are good to go on this, considering I already have some of the chickens and the eggs are coming this week.
Now I only have to worry about incubating my eggs for the first time.I will keep my fingers crossed, I think I am more excited than my kids.
My chicks are so cute, the black stars are a little high strung but the Americaunas are so loveable.They love to be held and cuddled.
My pug just had a litter of pups (3) the day after the chicks were hatched and she is trying to mother them too. When they start making noise she runs over to the brooder to check on them and then back to her pups.She justs goes back and forth between her pups and them.
When I take them out she rubs her head against them and licks them like she is trying to clean them they way she does her pups.
Hopefully we will all be one big happy family.

You'll find with all the shows and the enablers on here, it's better to start out bigger and add birds as you go. That's not even counting NH and CT chickenstock...I tried having one last year, but DH put the Kibosh on it. (jerk) LOL

For the longest time there was a family that raised Llamas on Summer Street and a guy on Federal that has racing pigeons...

I know someone on here recommended to always build bigger.They said no one ever regrets building a coop too big its always building to small.
I would love to go to some of those shows.
All About Egg; In our town you can own 3 dogs and then you have to get a kennel license.
I called the town after they were born last week and asked them what I had to do.They said make sure you are going to keep the whole litter first and if you are then after their first shots at 8 weeks then you can apply for a license when you register the pups.
They make it sound easy to do but I will probably have to run down the street naked or do cartwheels to get one.
As long as I don't have to do naked cartwheels!!haha
Now the hubby has said all along that we could keep one of the pups when she had her litter, but now that they are here and the kids are harassing him about it I think he is going to relent.Actually I think he already has since they named them yesterday and he didn't say anything about it.
Normally I wouldn't want that many dogs since we are already so busy but the kids are all very good about pitching in to take care of them.They always have been, so I guess it wouldn't be as bad as I thought.
Besides most pug owners will tell you that pugs are like potato chips you can never stop at just one.They have the best disposition and personality, I just love those smooshed little mugs.
The pug breed is very addicting, like another species of animals I know...........
