Getting prepared

I am trying to get 'all my ducks (chicks) in a row' before I get my coop...and then my chicks...
I plan to only have about 6 chicks and want several varieties...
Any/all suggestions appreciated...

- great to have you join us. I'm sure you already have checked out the Learning Centre - theres lots of stuff there that is helpful. The Coop section is a great source of inspiration for your build, and your state thread will put you in contact with other BYC nearby - maybe they would be better placed to advise on suitable breeds etc. Above all, make yourself at home and enjoy planning for your chicken adventure and being part of BYC.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. The best breeds for you will depend on what your criteria is for having chickens. If sheer egg production is your primary purpose, White Leghorns (for white eggs) and Black and Red Sex Links (for brown eggs) are the best layers in the chicken world. For this reason, these are the hens used by commercial laying houses as they are egg laying machines, consistently churning out more than 300 large eggs per hen per year. If you are wanted pets, then I would suggest going with one of the breeds that has a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle such as Australorps, Faverolles, Orpingtons, Sussex, Cochins, or Brahmas. Of course there can always be an exception with any breed. If good temperament and high egg production is important to you, Australorps are the best layers on this list and Cochins are the poorest layers (although they are excellent brooders and mothers). Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breeds you decide to get, good luck with your flock.
