I have some chickens born in May, when I put them in the coop with the big chickens I separated the coop. It’s all closed in half metal half wire on top. There’s a few big limbs in there we’ve attached to the coop to roost on but by laying hens roost in the enclosed part where their boxes are. How do I get my pullets to roost in there, they just roost outside? I’ve tried putting them in there at dusk but they just run back in the open area. Should I move them in there at night once they’ve roostes for the night and see if they stay? Suggestions??

What I had to do to get my pullets to roost in there coop, was to leave them in the coop for 2 weeks, not letting them out for anything but ensuring they have enough food, water, shade etc. This worked like a charm! They would get used to roosting every night in there coop, and it lets them know where there "home" is!
I'd love to see some pics of your pullets!:love
Good luck!

At this point I have 9 cockerels at only 5 pullets...so sas

I also have a red pullet too... I don’t have any pics of her. They’re all mix breeds from my sons pre-K class

Pics of your full coop and run, inside and out, please?
How long have the birds lived together?
Pullet will not fully merge with the older hens until they start laying, they may need separate roosts until then.
What are your plans for all those cockerels?
Would be good to employ it soon...I put my cockerels in the freezer by 12-16 weeks old.

I don’t have any pics right now, the roosters will be leaving soon... if I don’t rehome them they will go to a livestock auction on the 25th. I hoping to rehome then before I have to take them to the Auction. They’re getting pretty aggressive and they’re jumping on my laying hens and each other. I’m not really down for putting them in the freezer... I don’t care if someone else does it but I just don’t want to. If someone else processed them then I might..

The enclosed part has 6 nesting boxes and 2 boards to roost on with ladders that some would rather roost on. That old door is where I had it separated before but I took it all down. I need to take the door down too. Just haven’t gotten around to that yet

Pretty "mixed breeds"! I bought pullets of 6 weeks in age first and left them in their small coop/run for a week. I then bought 2 four month old hens. I don't know if it's normal but my older hen adopted the pullets & is teaching them what to do. ie. Calling to food, settling the babies fights, and bringing them in to the coop when the solar lights come on! I'm loving it! Maybe I have special hens, super smart, and gorgeous!! I'm Not biased or anything

So coop is about 4x6'?
Pics of the inside of that please?

Nice run area...might add some 'playground equipment' for diversionary and 'hiding places'. That old door could be leaned against run wall or put on top of concrete blocks(or something else) for an under and over space.

I’m in SE Georgia... it’s HOT!! But the run is shaded from all the trees around it and the metal over half of the run. They don’t really have anywhere to hide but they do have a few places to climb on.
