Getting ready to learn how to raise chickens.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
a. We are doing research and will look to begin with 6 hens.
b. We desire friendly or docile breeds. Looking at Rhode Island Red.
I am currently still working in construction (although retired) and my wife will be doing most of the caring as she is home (retired).
In purchasing books, it seemed that many favorable views and reviews were made of Backyard Chickens, so here I am.

When we purchased our current home (Bonneau, South Carolina), the previous owner had free range chickens and the yard and flower beds were quite a mess. Now that we are looking to slow down some, chickens may be a rewarding endeavor. Not for any finances, but for enjoyment and some added benefits.

I hope to be able to glean from the knowledge of others. I am looking at pinterest for ideas for coops, runs, etc.
