Getting rid of diahrrea??

I have a few hens who have pretty bad diahrrea, and their vents and fluff are covered in poop. They act and seem healthy, the only thing I can think causing this is letting them out a lot lately, but any home remedies for diahrrea? Thanks

Diarrhea is a means to an end, not necessarily an isolated illness. It generally means their bodies are trying to eliminate something. Diarrhea can be caused by cocci and other illnesses, parasites, bad diet, stress, and many other potential causes. Sometimes stopping diarrhea kills the organism because it causes toxins to remain within the body.

I would treat them for cocci just in case. I favor natural methods so I'd feed them fresh raw minced or crushed garlic every day for at least a week and use hydrated agricultural lime powder on all soil they walk on to kill the overburden of pathogens, oocysts and help break down their feces quicker.

If you favor non natural methods, someone would be able to advise you on what to use. I don't have the experience in that area to offer any suggestions.

Treating the cause of the disease will treat the symptoms, but the correct treatment of symptoms is helpful too. Raw apples, smashed or cut so they can peck at them, can cure diarrhea. So can raspberry leaf, raw or dried and made into a tea or added to their food. Unlike artificial means of stopping diarrhea, both of those will cleanse the body and not force an unnatural conclusion to the body's attempts to rid itself of something hostile.

How old are these hens and have they ever been dewormed? If not that would be a wise place to start.

Also add a good probotic. The probotic will add beneficial bacteria into the gut and create a healthy balance.a couple good probotics are probios which can be ordered off amazon.com, and poultry pro vita which can be found at tractor supply. These powdered probotics are easily administered in their drinking water and they offer much much more beneficial bacteria than they can get out of plain yougart. This should balance her system and stop her problem. Once it's collinized in the gut it can actually fight off bad bacteria as well. I started using probotics in my flock when I had a chick with constant pasty butt and dierhea. It cured it right up and my flock has not had a issue with dierhea since, thank God! This really works wonderfully! I use the probios but poultry pro vita is good as well. I think this will really help your bird. Best wishes.
