I am getting Silkie chicks in a month or so, and we don't want rooster. We are going to Atwoods to get them, and we haven't found if the are sexed or not. How can you tell? We want to know before we buy them. If we get a rooster, I don't know what we will do with it, not keep it.

I understand that sexing silkies is far from easy. Possibly the silkie experts on the silkie thread could give you further information.

Feed store silkies, like all bantam breeds, only come straight run (unsexed). If you want sexed bantam chicks check out My Pet Chicken. You can buy as few as 3. Sexed silkie pullets are abour $12 each, then there's the shipping.

Silkies are among the most difficult breeds to sex before, 4-5 mos. of age, and many not until they crow or lay eggs. If you absolutely MUST have pullets. The best way is to buy "started pullets," at point of lay, or adult laying hens. Personally I would not trust anyone's sexing skills on a bird less than 4 mos. old.

If we get a rooster, we will sell it at the state fair or a pet trade that happens in the middle of the school year and the middle of summer.
