Getting some spring chickens

I agree on the peeling being related to the age of the eggs vs the color. However, if you are set on white egg layers, My Pet Chicken has a breed selection tool where you can check various chicken qualities that appeal to you including egg color. The only white layers I have are Golden Campines - very pretty, but flighty and always flying over the fence. Mine also don't lay very well - maybe 3 per week.

I like my rose comb brown leghorns. (I ordered from mcmurray with other women last year and I don't know who else has them). I have a photo of one of them in my avatar. I got 4 in april, so I haven't had them through the winter yet, but it's gotten down to 4 degrees and they were all good. I will assume they'd do better than single comb leghorns in the cold, but I have not had those so I can't really say.

I like these girls. They are not skittish or flighty, but not lovey-dovey either. They are smart and lay ok. I have heard about anconas and was going to get some for spring, but I don't know if they'll be flightier than my RCBL's or not...

As I said, it's my mother who is very set in her decision and since every single chicken we have right now are ones I have picked, I figured it won't kill me to humor her as long as I get the chickens LoL

I'll check on MPC as well. Thanks for your advice

About the flighty birds... why does it seem that all the pretty ones are scaredy cats?? So frustrating...
My dog won't like them jumping the fence

He knows the chickens belong BEHIND the fence so he can keep a proper head count LoL

You should check out that link that WoodlandWoman gave me. It is very helpful. I've already started a list. So far, I'm only looking at egg color and cold hardiness but it seems to be very useful.

I already had it in my favorites. I used it this morning to add more chicks to my order.

Yayyy!!

If your mother prefers white eggs, then she should have white eggs. Shell color is nothing but personal preference and she prefers white.

The leghorns are the best layers, period. They beat every other breed of chicken. They lay white eggs so they are a good choice. If you get the brown leghorns, they are supposed to be calmer and I think they are prettier.

My experience with leghorns is that they are livelier. They are more active and they are great foragers. I suspect that is what other people are calling "skittish". I found them to be friendly, just higher energy.

I love my EE's they are awesome. But, a word to you here from my experience: their shells are the toughest on my place. Needs a little more presurre to break the shell open.

Don't let it scare you though, they are great.

Silly question, but what color eggs do brown leghorns lay? I got a couple from a friend of mine last fall, they were molting and I haven't gotten any eggs out of them yet. Not that it matters, I was just wondering.
