Getting Started Again Raising Chickens!

Hello BYC Friends,
I have been away from the farm for many a year and we are back wanting to start raising a few pretty chickens and to be able to see them grow, love them and have our wonderful own eggs.

We are retired so looking what we need to start up with our own little group.
Any suggestions are welcomed. We live in Gene Autry, Ok north about 8 miles from Ardmore. We shop at Tractors Supply for our Dog, Horse and Rabbit needs. They are getting in ducks and chickens but I wanted to order some Dutch Bantam Cockerels for their beauty, and color.
Then we want a few Rhode Island Reds and one other breed of the larger chicken. For Larger Eggs.

I love them and can't wait to get started.

I am excited about being here and being a part of this awesome group.
I have actually all things to relearn. We live on a farm but it isn't ours.
We are looking to purchase ours this year. But with Spring and the
new chicks, I wanted to get going here and just move them when we move.

I need help with building an area for my chickens...what kind of wire and
also here in the country we have hawks, and all kinds of predators too.
Would a house with wire pre fab built be best way to go?

I must have looked at coop ideas for months before deciding. There are tons of ideas and even some with step by step plans here. Just look under the coop section. I happened to love the Wichita coop. We build a variation of that, and you'll see that many others have too. Personally, predators are my biggest fear. I covered every open area with hardware cloth.

Take a look around. You'll find tons of answers to all your questions. Try joining a thread based on your location to see what people in your area do. Feel free to send me a private message if you need anything. I've only been around for a little while, but I would help you anyway I can.
 
Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X2 on christine9's suggestion of check out the BYC Coops section for ideas, and hardware cloth for wire on the coop. Prefab chicken coops are usually not very well built, and you can build or have someone build you a much better one for less. You plan on taking the coop you are going to make right away with you? A chicken tractor might be something to consider.
 
Do you plan to have the birds together some bantam cockerels + hens? I only ask because the cockerels will overbreed the hens if they are not separated. A rooster can usually handle 10 hens, though small ,bantams set tall heights for their goal.
