Bump!
It happened! We have chicks! Still no coop, but they are happy in their brooder and plans for the coop are coming along. Going to go gather ideas from the forums for that more in a bit. Our plan was to put the coop in our barn (and we still may) but our barn is pretty close to some neighbor houses and I am concerned about alienating our neighbors if we have the chicks too close. I may talk with my hubby tonight about doing a stand-alone coop or a portable one on the other side of our property tonight instead. Bonus, they will be closer to the compost pile then too and I won't be as concerned if one of our chicks turns out to be a roo.
So... we ended up with three black sex links, a mille fleur d'uccle (my older son's pet), two Ameruacana (may have mis-spelled, but they should be pure, from a local breeder), two Olive Eggers, and a Bantam Cochin. We plans to go back for a few more regular Cochin in a month when they hatch (hopefully some golden or silver laced) and possibly a Tom Turkey that my hubby fell for! We do have a pond on our property, so maybe next year we will talk ducks too! So much fun planning! I just worry about the ducks because we can't see the pond from our house and we know there are foxes and bobcats back there.... not sure how to handle that just yet.
