Getting started

:welcome

I agree with @DobieLover and @TwoCrows that a shed might be your coop answer. With a little modification you will have a nice coop for your upcoming flock.

Best wishes!
I'm not ready for building my own. My wife doesn't want an eyesore out back and that's about what I'd create with my skill level.

It seems the shed idea is pretty popular. I have an existing shed with nothing in it. How do you convert a shed for chickens? It has a door that opens top and bottom separate and a window on one side. It was previously used for horses so it's decently large. Thanks for the help!

You can attach a couple of 2x4 boards to the inside shed walls (wide side of the boards facing down) for the chickens to roost on. Put them about 12" away from the wall and not too high that the chickens hurt themselves jumping down. Add a box or two lower than the roosts for them to nest in. For ventilation, take the glass out of the window and cover it with hardware cloth (not chicken wire). To add additional ventilation, cut holes in the shed wall up toward the roof line and cover those with hardware cloth.

It sounds as though your flock could use the bottom part of the dutch door to enter and exit the coop. At nighttime you'll want to be sure to secure both parts of the door (top and bottom) well to keep predators such as raccoons from getting inside.

If the shed floor is dirt, you'll want to block digging predators from tunneling into the shed/coop from the outside. You can block them by piling up rocks or placing bricks around the outside (wide enough to discourage any digging).

Others may have additional suggestions as well, this is what comes to me right now.
