Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

(I spent 2007 as a biosecurity researcher focused on H5N1. Corporate meat production is one seriously surreal logistics problem, ethics and health issues aside.  My breaking point was sitting through a presentation on a miraculous new orange scented foam that could be sprayed into an infected chicken house to simultaneously smother the birds, disinfect the premises and compost the bodies.  The inventor of said foam kept emphasizing how it was orange scented, it would be acceptable to the public!)

I have seen said foam in action (wasn't orange scented) and it is remarkably effective in a very disturbing way. The presentations that I saw focused on the ability to quickly and effectively depopulate with minimal human exposure. This was in the context of H5N1 and the veterinary/public health interface. And as you mentioned - it is a major logistical problem.

right up there with tossing day old male leghorns into the grinder to make chicken and veg dog food

Another day draws to a close on CocoBeach

It was feed mixing day. Dodong turned 1200 lbs of ingredients into feed.

The new brooder spent the afternoon being painted a nice third world orange color.

Our birds are coming off their molt and we are hitting 40 eggs a day. We will be really testing out the incubator capacity, I maxes at around 1100 double stacked but I cannot see demand hitting that.

Sales are good. I am managing to get 1-2 sales a day. Some are decent. My minimum is set at $50 and am getting deposits for Feb 22 hatch birds.

The facebook page is taking off. Thats a numbers game. I am getting 300+ likes a day on the main page wich is cool. I am wriring chickenology articles and posting them every day or two to keep things fresh.

Oh.

Hmmmmm.....

I would REALLY be interested in the measurements, then.

In my situation, I hatch a weeks worth of SC eggs at a time. I brood from 2 - 12 chicks from one hatch at a time. I can combine the hatches that are only a week different in ages, but I need a way to get them out of the garage and to keep them separated until they can go outside.

I'm sure Oz's babies can go out earlier than mine due to his temperate climate, but I still think the high-rise brooder would work for me.
