You know I have seen plans online for a home made cooler... Not freezer but a home made walk in cooler using just a plain old window air conditioner.

My grandma who was born in 1916 says they never had electricity. And they would butcher one pig a year for a family of eight to live on. They had a big wooden box they filled with salt then put the butchered pig in and covered it over the top with salt. Of course they were in Colorado so they did get some natural refrigeration... but salt was the best means of preservation.

Probably not practical at home hunh...

i bet they did the butchering during the cool months too.

once we are in phase 2,654 we will have a walkin cool room for curing meats and cheeses.
