Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Mrs oz and the kids are off to Gigantes Islands with a group in a convoy of 2 minivans. they will take the ro-ro ferry to the next island west - Panay - then travel to a resort for the day night, spending tomorrow afternoon exploring the islands.

I will be shipping around 110 birds. (it would be 160 if we did not cook the eggs). I have lots to do here.

we performed AI on pig 17. Toto did a great job. I was very impressed with his technical skill and patience.

mozza finally started training. we will add bamboo poles to the trailer to attach to her yolk once she is ready. hopefully in a month she will be pulling a cart well enough to make her one of her own.

we also used a fish bucket as a mold to make a concrete sink for the piggery as well as a stock tank for the goats.

Ariel is toughening his feet climbing coconut trees. he has what looks like 100kg of copra. we want 800kg to take to the mill. at current prices and with 800kg we should get $600 of which he gets $240. not a bad bonus.

Dodong is off Saturday and the goal is to bring Toto up to speed on documentation.
Skill is a good thing, To have the patience to use the skill is even better.
Hope your kids have a good side trip!!

Toto is living on the farm. He comes from a village about 25 miles from here but staying on farm is essential.

its 514am the ac is still on in the bedroom and I can barely hear the roosters but the chatter of the guinea is omnipresent.

I have not heard from Mrs Oz. its a remote location so there will be no ,,

its musical brooder day

we have 425 chickens in the brooders, 110 will be shipped, 40 will get their coryza vaccine and graduate to the grow out pen.

I will take Toto with me to the airport to show him how we process the shipping

we made it home in time to heat up left over Sheppard's pie for lunch. it was then back to the chicken. the big shipment, along with the absence of a hatch made lots of room in the brooders. we did a complete inventory of birds in the brooders. we scraped and cleaned the condominiums and gave them new rice husks. the chicks had loads of fum scratching around.

today is pig wright day and we should get some roosters processed.

the grow out pen needs to be worked on.

we lost 3 birds in shipping.

one of the buyers was at the airport early and saw the 730 flight come in. there were 8 dead roosters on arrival. it was a blistering hot day. I could only imagine how bad losses could be if we sent the birds in the earlier heat.

fortunately I had extra birds in the shipments that incurred losses.

yes Toto has good English skills.

he also gets why we do things. because he gets why, he can problem solve. this allows more flexibility in management.

its only been a week but he is everything I expected thus far.
