Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

The lad did not make it.

I am not sure getting mamma goats colustrum into him would have made a difference. He never picked up from time of birth.

Syrel is devastated. I leaned on him a bit as he was perhaps not as attentive to the goat as he should have been in the first few hours and intervened earlier. I did explain that I understood his lack of experience with goats and its my fault for not giving him better guidelines.

Onwards and upwards

Poor buckling... some things just aren't meant to be... think he waas lucky to survive to birth given the circumstances...

Experience is a tough teacher, but the positive spin from this is I bet Syrel will never forget this lesson... sounds like he cares and that bodes well for him in future...

Yes. He asked me to deduct the value of the buckling from his paycheck.

I told him that a good goat curry is priceless LOL

just kidding my actual response was:

Wow... his reaction is amazing considering how you've explained the usual attitudes about pay there... I like Syrel... hope he works out...
And excellent response from a boss, Oz... :thumbsup

Nice. Sounds like everyone learned something important, even though the buckling didn't make it.

You guys should make a great team.

One of the many challenges of a supervisor is to ensure that your subordinates have clear parameters. To do that, you need to treat everyone like robots or assess your employee's competencies and do individualized training. I have to do a combination of both. I have policies and procedures for pig and chicken husbandry but not goats. I will start working on them.

Daniel started last Sunday in a bit of a rush. I had emailed job descriptions to him prior to start but as Mrs Oz was coming from the wrong side of the island he has yet to receive his HR employment packet. I just customized it and it will go out with this weeks wages. Its 48 pages

Syrel. I would be angry if I thought you were lazy. I don't think you are. If I was there watching and training, it may (only may) have had a different outcome.

I am not there. I am expecting some problems as we work together from 7200 miles apart.

Its my fault for not giving you better guidelines.

But we have both been better educated and should have great outcomes ahead.
And what was his response?

Also what happened to the dead buckling?
