Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

My flock has been cut in half in a matter of days!

All of my Cochins but one are gone. Two huskies came through on Saturday and again today and wiped me out! I am figuring they are also behind the loss of 2 about 2 weeks ago as well. Not sure what I am going to do just yet. Debating about getting out of chickens all together. UGH.

I had the same thing happen a month ago! A dog got in our backyard and managed to rip put coop door off its hinges and slaughtered all 9 of my almost laying hens. I cried so hard because I loved each and everyone of them and they adored me. I have since purchased 2 LB hens, a hen with chicks and given her 6 more to adopt, and 3 LB and 4 BLRW chicks that were a month old, not counting 26 hatching eggs lol. It broke my heart though and I almost gave up on chickens all together. I'm very sorry for your loss, and I know how you feel.

In my part of NC, I have been told to shoot any dogs bothering my stock! The county will not come out over a chicken killer, they and the police told me to JUST SHOOT IT and don't bother us with it. So I do.

I hate when people just let their dogs roam at will and don't care about the damage they cause.

I could never shoot a dog unless I knew it had rabies or posed a threat to a human being. I love animals especially dogs....though if I ever caught 1 attacking my birds I don't know what I'd do. Though they would have to make it past my beloved pup first.
Love my pup pup....I wouldn't trust her with someone else's chickens nor mine except when they are in some kind of cage. She's gotten loose a couple times when I've let her out and I thought for sure she would have killed my flock but she's ignored them every time so far. Hope it stays that way. Of course I wish she would quit being an escape artist too.

When's she's gotten loose she has yet to harm anybody's pets. She just loves to roam and run.

I don't bother to call animal control either; the dogs would be long gone before they got here and would just be back the next day for more. I have shot quite a few dogs over the last few years because they were in my rabbit or chicken pens. The last time was 2 big pit bulls jumped the fence. I keep a loaded .22 rifle behind the door just for such occasions. Worst case scenario I get charged with discharging a firearm within however many feet it is of a residence.

If you thought it was quick, you should have seen it from this end.

A big 96 hours.

Lorenzo had a great party. The kids are still wearing their cowboy boots here at the airport. Mrs Oz the nannies and kids are on a different airline to Manila around the same time as my flight.

We set an inordinate number of eggs. Hoping for a big hatch but will be happy with a moderate one. Quail in 15 days then chickens pheasant guineas ducks and turkey. There are also 42 mutt eggs in the bator due in 11 days.

We built sewer pipe feeders and set up the original coops with auto feeders.

We built a three level bator with the auto turners I had. It is using heating elements used to mould plastics instead of lights. I put 80mm fans on the end of 3" sewer pipe to draw the heat to the bottom. I am very pleased with the air flow. It holds 123 chicken eggs.

I rewired the display case Bator's thermostat as it was loosened when it was moved.

We discussed medications and when to use them.

We vaccinated 200 birds for Newcastle disease and fowl pox.

I swam with the kids.

Oh and I got a few hours sleep.

Not a bad trip.

Just writing for my flight to Manila. Pics as soon as I recover.
