Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

We get less than fifty percent with any local eggs ~ native, mixed or purebred under a broody.

An update on the hatch. My numbers were off.

236 viable eggs. 115 hatched. 49%

Local control group
33 viable eggs 29 hatch 88%

Prior shipped hatches were in the twenties.

Really? That is quite interesting. I have found if I have good fertile eggs under the broody I run a 90-100% usually 100% actually. I think only once did I have an egg not develop fully, but then I have only done broodies 4-5 times. Have some eggs under a turkey hen now for the first time. Will see how that goes.

One hundred and thirty chicks were removed from the brooder.

Our hatch rate is very close to fifty percent. A huge improvement.

I am pretty sure that with some Hatcher tweaking we can further improve it.

The buff and English Orpington, white rocks, Brown leghorn, black australorp, polish, hidden sebright and white leghorn did well. Her mutts were stars. The four Brahma did not hatch. Only one Sussex.
booooo on the brahma

Its a busy day at CocoBeach. 1000 pieces of nipa roof thatching arrived at seven cents a piece. It will take three thousand to do the 24x48 piggery.

The foundation is just about complete. It may be done today then the floor will be poured.

Another order of sand will be delivered on Sunday.

Mrs Oz is off to buy twenty lengths of bamboo to use in the piggery roof.

This afternoon the family well head to the city for a function. I am have Mrs Oz get a roll of fish netting to make a large free range grow out pen for the hundreds of chicks.

The fact that even broody hens can't get a great hatch rate is indicative of the humidity issues.

In a controlled environment I get an average of ninety percent on locally laid eggs.

I also have very few hens go broody. The next one will get chicks put under her to see how she goes.

The next hatch is on the weekend. I am paying that we end up with a few turkeys and mallard type ducks.

The one goose egg still looks ok. There are ten more in the incubator set on Sunday

This is great proof of what you have achieved thru hard work, study and all those helpers here and at coco beach. Pretty amazing!
Thought I would include a photo of the chicks I hatched out with their broody momma.
