Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

When I was a kid there was an ad for a Chrysler Sigma that showed this 2L engine car hauling a travel trailer (caravan in oz). That really stuck with me. You dont need a large vehicle to haul stuff. Our Asian Utility Vehicle - as the class is known - is a 2.5L diesel 5 speed that seats 7 Asians comfortably. Its built on a chassis the size of a small pick-up. It was $17000 new and will be paid off in September.

if we could only buy such a vehicle here for the same price :(

instead they want us to buy suv's with gas engines

i'll pass

Back to the chickens

The boys pretended they were fishermen today and used a fishnet to corner 232 8 - 12 week old chicks into a coner, assess and change leg bands and vaccinate with Coryza vaccine. When I bought the vaccine I saw 1000 doses and thought what a waste. Today we vaccinated 300 birds alone. And they get a second dose in three weeks!! I will order more in a month.

We had a coconut tree branch come down and collect 5 chicks in the grow pen. Dominic has set himself a new tree climbing and cleaning regimen. I am very pleased he came up with it himself.

The guineas should be hatching this week. I am excited by it. I did not pinion the wings of the parent stock but will do these as I want them to be out and about - just not out too far. I have tormented with the cruelty versus convenience. I am going with convenience. They will be pinioned as day olds.

The quail and chukar seem very happy in their coop. No more feather picking. Dominic is also finding eggs - mostly in the nest boxes.

I had planned to bring Toulouse Goose eggs over next trip but lost my supplier. I may have to wait till next season...

The next trip will not have a lot of eggs. Mostly turkey and to shure up a couple of breeds. I finally got my MRI appointment so now I have to wait to see the ortho guy. As the date is up in the air, I cannot really plan in advance.

The July 4 trip will be set in stone and hopefully I will have no other luggage I need to carry as I have been shipping everything via freight well in advance

a funny thing happened on the way to the pig pen...

See maybe the quail are coming around. Ducks did I had a final count of 7/8 yesterday and last guy went to brooder this morning. It may be named because he almost went in the waste basket with the duds. I had to assist last night and left him in bator over night so he could gain strength before he joined the others. This AM he happy and up and about. We talked about turkeys but that went to back burner and wife got frustrated with only local breeder selling. So we can concentrate on chickens and ducks. She even has told me a couple things she wants me to do. Before it was always "Do what you want I just want eggs and chicken." 1 We need more ducks she says. And 2 We have a BYM feather foot hatched last year by a broody, and that IOWA Blue rooster. She wants me to cross them. Why? IDK but only 2 request that are easily accomplished (I hope) can be done to make her content.
Lost the 3/4 BA in with Meat project birds last night. Temps were cold and he appeared layed on. Sucks because I like it's looks the best out of all that batch, real smoky looking. Maybe I'll have to breed a bunch of those later. and see how adults look.
