Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

that was a farm innovators i picked up on CL for 20 bucks. Its a still air and I was waiting for spacers to install the fan so I tried it out as a hatcher. I like to put a skyflakes container in a hovabator full of water for lockdown but it wont fit in this. I ended up putting a tupperware container in it. One of the chicks comitted hare kare by taking a dip while I was at work. Very depressing. I dont like the thermostat either. Way too sensitive. I amusing digital thermostat to control it.

I also have a HB Genesis with a picture window. What a great foam bator. Its dead on with its temp control.

i should have the 220v home made bator finished saturday
put a lid on any water container then drill holes in the top
almost 1/2 way throught my 2nd hatch
this time i filled er up
looks like i need to run much less water in it
i try to keep it at about 40%
it was at 50% today when i checked so i had to pull both plugs so it would get back to where i wanted it
i'll bring er up to about 80% once day 18 arrives

My little coturnix eggs hatched last night & this am! I couldn't beleive it I got 100% hatch rate.I put in 24 eggs on the morning of feb 12th and had 24 babies by this morning. I didn't freak over humidity this time. My humidity gauge in the incubator read 30% and my basement room read about 40%. I added no water to the bator during incubation. Wednesday night I saw a couple pipped, so I turned off the turner and put them upright in the turner trays. Thursday morning added one of those styrofoam meat trays with two sponges in it and filled it up with water. Took out the hygrometer. They started hatching that afternoon. I filled the water/sponge area twice during hatch with airline tubing. It was easy breezy clean up with no water underneath with egg shells floating. Now I'm looking for someone locally to trade these quail to for chicken hatching eggs so I can join the Easter hatch along here.
I am totally addicted to hatching eggs!

side note* we did get 8 inches of snow here on Monday which I'm sure helped with the humidity

Great info and congrats!!

Mrs Oz will appreciate the simplicity - she will be the crazy quail lady.

It turns out that she will be here (USA) during the hatch of my easter egg run and will not be able to participate so I will hold off with quail till the end of May. I hope to have turkeys and peafowl on that trip as well.

Yay peafowl I've been waiting for you to add that to your list! There such fun birds to have around.

They have really been near the top of my list but most people want so much for eggs its ridiculous. Given the ordeal I have to go through, I want to make sure I am not wasting my money and time.

I found a person that has several colors. I will try and get india blue and java green - six eggs of each - and hope I can get a male and female from each group.

I would appreciate any advice!!

So the chicks are now almost 8 weeks of age.

My 33 month old daughter and her nanny decided to pack a picnic lunch and go visit Bernie and Analou, have a swim at the beach and see how Stewie the baby goat and the 36 chicks are getting along.

They jumped on a air-con bus for the 2.5 hr ride to Kabankalan. From there they attempted to get a second bus the 20km to our place. After 4 full buses, they decided to take a jeepney – much to the delight of Antonia who loves adventure.

Four hours later, they are now at the beach house having lunch. At about 3pm (11pm PST) they will head back and get in to Bacold around 6:30pm. Toni will be exhausted but will no doubt talk in her sleep all night, re-living the day.

I cant wait to watch and hear her on Skype as she tells me her account of the day.

The girls were armed with cameras.

Chick pics to follow.
