Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

We just banded the local chicks that the mama abandoned to sit on some eggs laid by her buddies. Just cable ties. We will replace them next week.

I have 9 colors lol. The next batch of eggs will contain breeds that are clearly distinguishable so I may just band all the mutts.

Where do you get your cable ties? I have 4 colors from Wally world, but they come with a bunch I don't really need.

those are some fine looking young ones you have hatched out OZ

i just turned out all the lights so i could do an egg check
out of 41 set eggs i had 1 that quit really early & 8 clear
most of the clear looked to be from my britts
as soon as i get a couple large size nest boxes built i will be moving those britts to their new quaters
i hope they like the back end of my workshop
they will also be getting a nice warm bath & a bottom trim too

it's only below freezing here at night so their water should only have a small amount of ice on top when
the Mrs. goes to check on them in the early AM. (i think she gets up before the chickens do

)
i also got one of those black rubber flexable water pans
it was only 8 bucks at the feed store & should give them good service till i can put their
summer time hanging water bucket with nipples in (those don't work well in cold weather unless there is a heater inside it)

so i still have 32 eggs cooking 3 being from my silkie pen
the rest are probably buff orpingtons

are you still planning on doing a May egg run to the PI?
the hens are almost back up to full production

take care

i have 7 buff hens so getting you 24 eggs should not be any real problem over a few days time
i only keep eggs around for 7 days then i set them
so if i collect for say 4 days then ship next day then it's day 5 when those arrive
& then on day 6 you fly out, with a little luck you can set them on day 7 or 8
i'll talk really nice to my girls for you OZ
if they come up short i guess i'll slip in a couple silkie eggs in for ya
but i think you want to go after the buffs at this point....correct?
i'll have 3 more silkie hens laying come June
which will bring my up to a total of 5
then we can work on collecting up some of those
till then i have 1 silkie girl attending chicks & 1 that lays about every other day
but i'm sure they will both "lay" rite into it once the days get a little longer
