Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

you hit it on the head Scott

its #6 aluminum wire and melting the insulation off it at the breaker. I will replace it will #6 copper. the run is 70 feet. #6 should be OK for 60 amp load
#6 aluminum wire is good for 50-60 amps depending on insulation..... Corrosion has probably "infected" the connection point.... poor connections cause heat.... Using an electrical paste like NO-OX on the exposed wire and breaker connections should help.... BUT.... Think about running larger wire to a sub panel and divide the load....
Copper wire would be an excellent choice as salt will destroy the aluminum wire.... Salt can get into anything and destroy it...

Diva, I have a small lamp in there, but it isn't very powerful. Usually if I'm reading something in there, it's on the phone, so that's okay. But I think the better half would prefer a decent light to put on her make up.

its pretty unusual for light fittings to fail unless poorly installed or in a salty environment. its most likely the switch.

turn the circuit breaker off, take down the fitting and check the pigtails or screws that attach the main wiring. if its a wall switch do the same.

always work on electrical when someone else is at home and be sure to tell them when you are playing with wires.

the Philippines is very consumer orientated. having the best phone is paramount. most phones are prepaid so an iPhone 6 is about 1000 dollars yet the apple store is sold out.

they are also one the highest ranking users of social media in the world. internet cafes make good money from Facebook and Instagram.

a young Filipina will skimp on food to save to buy a "forever 21" article of clothing, then use the shopping bag as a purse to carry lunch to work until it falls apart so everybody knows she bought something there. A Starbucks coffee will be sipped all day

I feel that we pay good salaries. A couple can afford to pay off a motorbike as domestic employees which is unheard of. by having a large benefit package ensures the future for the children. paying for education is better than alcohol or cell phone status. the lump sums from copra sales gives them the opportunity to buy bigger purchases that they could never afford by trying to save. pressure from families to give money from monthly salary is high. those few hundred pesos a month they save end up going to pay for a party or someone's debt at a loan shark. we encourage our workers not to share with their families the profit sharing deal. it should be their choice how they spend the money.
i have seen 1st hand most of what OZ has stated above

throw your logic out the window when dealing with 75% of the people in the Philippines

as luck would have it my wife could care less about what label is her jeans or shirt

she would rather stock up on canned goods or build another coops for more chickens

i think she might be a keeper
