Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

lol - please do. i am dying to hear. besides, they will be siblings and cousins to my future chickens. they have a right to know.
ok here goes

we had a good hatch
we put 41 eggs in our hovabator, on day 10 we found that 8 were clear so we removed them, no bator on earth would have been able to make those hatch so i'm not even counting them.

there was also an early quitter so we removed that too before it started to smell bad

so come day 21 we had 32 left in the bator
26 hatched rite out on their own
2 more looked to be stuck
i left them over night & when i woke they were still stuck rite there
i never opened up the bator so i'm not sure what the problem was
i couldn't just let them expire so i removed them 1 at a time
after putting warm water on my fingers i wet the outer membrain which was showing all along the side of the shell
i peeled off chunks of shell till each was free
they still had some "icky" stuff on them which didn't want to come off so they didn't fluff up like the rest.

so i left those 2 in the bator till today & i gave them a warm bath
one had foot & leg trouble
eek.gif

the foot is better today but the leg is still weak
i have them in my little brooder together
we will see if they make it or not.

most of what i hatched was buff orpingtons
so without delay here they are

& here are the 3 silkies that i also hatched out with the orps

there were also a couple mixed chicks that hatched out
along with this imported english orpington

i opened up the lst 4 eggs that were still in the bator
4 fully formed chicks not sure why they didn't hatch out like the others

you can copy and past right into this site - thats why I ended up here.

Congrats on the hatch. Mighty fine work. If I get 70% of your hatch rate, I will have a nice buff orp starter kit.

Did the 4 that quit late pip internally?

i used the direct link from photo bucket , it already worked for another site but not here for some reason :(
not sure if they internally pipped, i went in through the air sack & the membrain was still intact....very strange
i just built that brooder for this hatch, it's 4 foot long, rite now they are just down on 1 end but once they get a little size to them
i'm sure they will enjoy the extra room to run.

piglett

PS:getting 6to7 eggs a day out of my buff orp hens
which is about all i can ask from 7 hens
i'll check what the cut off time is at the postoffice come monday
so you get the freshest eggs i can send to ya.
happy hatching :)

the brooder is great!!!

i love the thermometer and the high sides.

mine is a circle made of 24 inch wide gi metal about 6 feet in diameter, Made from GI as the rats cant climb it. I am going to need a second one. I will probably do something like yours, elevate it and rat proof the legs instead. The GI sheet makes a heck of a noise when touched. scares the devil out of the little blighters

tell those girls to keep on layin'
