Could be a common nighthawk. They're active at night and make a call that could be described as you said.

Check out this site to listen to the "peent" calls. These recordings are really a lot better than what I usually hear when they're in flight.

What I listened to was more "bird like" and higher pitched than what I heard in the sky, which I have no other way to discribe it but a loud, wet fart. Weird.

My slow dial up makes listening to all of the sound bytes slow to say the least but I did hear some of several of the ones on that site. I will try again during the night when I have time to let them all load fully.
