Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Here's my latest brooder - never lost a chick so far.

Thats one slick design Ashburnham. I also like the fact that you are going to use a ceramic heater. That way they can get some good sleep. I really like the dimmer Idea. REALLY like it.

Though My next brooder is going to be a wire bottomed one. I will place ply wood tray in there for sleeping so I can have bedding for the little peeps. But all the food and water will go over wire so that WHEN they spill it goes in to a catch basin and not in all their bedding.
I tried brooding Guinea keets in tubs and it was a nightmare to keep clean..... the little Jack booters....

Kicked or knocked every feeder or waterer I had over. Or filled em up with shavings then the shavings wicked all the water out in the bedding....

i'm open for most anything if it will get the same job done & i can save some coin
but i know nothing of any ohio brooders....do you have the plans?
how many hatching eggs will i need to send you to get the info

looks good!
what i have is a big cage that is 4 feet tall 5 feet long & a little over 2 feet from front to back
it had wire mesh on the inside to keep my meat birds inside
i used it to grow them out ,some would be processed..... the big ones
& we would leave the smaller ones till they we the size we wanted
well the meat birds are either going into a movable chicken tractor this year
or a lean-to on the side of the main coop
so what to so with the old meat bird pen ????
i'm thinking a 4 deck brooder

now it's dam cold where i am in the winter
i'm talking -25c at times
but i could add a second set of lights for the really cold times
everything would have to be set up in pairs
that way if 1 bulb gives up i will not suffer the loss of a whole batch
i don't want 50 dead chicks on my hands :(

i just got my 2nd hovabator yesterday & we also have a picture window hatcher
i'll start setting eggs come Jan. 1st
that is the only way that i know of to get the volume of pullets that people want around here

i think we will also try out selling meat birds in a bag next year (all processed ready to go)
if not what will i do with 300 cockerels???
not sure on the price but $10 each sounded good
maybe that # is too low ?

if i put them on organic feed i can probably double that # & still make money.....maybe?

well back to work folks

i'll build one & see how it works, is start out with a pair of 25 watt bulbs for this time of year
in cold weather i'll go with a pair of 40 watt bulbs & we will see the results
