Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

I would think that a few feet of chain-link (like 6' or so) would be a good starting point for the side fence. Old tin would work for the cover, some what dry and good shade da-boot!!

Scott ( who has thought about those birds)
a month ago i started by standing some pallets up & nailing them together to form a good solid barrier
i have 1 side & the back done.
in between each pallet i drove a piece of angle iron into the ground about 2 feet then nailed it to the pallet with a couple of 20p spikes
but there is no top or door :(
my to do list is as long as my arm so i havn't been able to jump back on that project
i still need to put 2x6 rafters on top & bolt them to the angle iron so i have something to put the roof on
we can have 3 to 4 feet of snow on the ground up here at any one time in the winter so the roof has to be really strong
on the outside of the pallets i will add some chainlink fence that i scored from the dump
it's that fancy black plastic coated stuff that will last for years
& it was priced rite FREE :)
all of this will be on the back side of the building so looks are not important but good & stout is.

Opps! I had forgotten where you were, I am so used to dealing with heat issues, that shade is always on my mind when building anything for critters.

Scott
shade is something i have to think about for my blue & splash english orpingtons (not the blacks though)
if they are allowed to spend too much time outside with direct sunlight they tend to get sunburnt feathers on their backs
then you have your lighter colored birds with brown ugly looking feathers on their backs till they molt.
for warm weather i was thinking about just a blue tarp overhead of their outside run.
but come winter i'll have to do something that is much stronger so the snow doesn't cause problems.

these birds came from a place where it is mostly rainy so they are not used to lots of hot sunny days
but they do seem to do ok on hot days in the coop

Greetings. We have been struggling to get internet as usual. It seems best between 3 am and 7 am.

The eggs we had Bernie set from the original hatch have candled well. There are about 50 eggs that were set in 3 batches. The first one will hatch Friday do I should see the new generation. This is a huge milestone in the grand scheme. Its also a great control experiment on non shipped eggs.

We put our original 3 Muscovy in the fridge yesterday. The meet was cleaned off the bones and is in the fridge with paprika sage and thyme. I will be sausage stuffing in the morning.

On my way! Little ring neck pheasant out one or two on the way...cute little buggers.
