Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

That's what happens when you live in a different time zone to your family.

I could be getting into all sorts of trouble both in the flesh and online. Instead, I hatch a few chicks, watch the off TED.org broadcast and read.

I have not turned on my TV in 5 months.

Mate- Chooks are far more interesting than anything on TV around here! lol

I just went up to PA and picked up their silkies for a reasonable price and got 2 Blue Breda chicks as well, and they had Bresse chicks available. Here is the site

Oh no, you're making me want another new breed!
I just looked at the Blue Breda's and they are so pretty!
I am trying so hard to keep mine to 10 different girls, but I keep seeing new things I want to add!

Do you live in Maryland? (guessing when it said you went up to pa....)
I was born & raised there, moved down to NC going on 5 years when my husband got stationed at Ft Bragg

Not MD, just east of it in DE. I wasn't planning on getting the Breda's either but couldn't help myself :)
I now have an over abundance of chickens, but they are still spoiled rotten.

that black looking chick at the front will grow into a blu breda roo.Zero comb

Oh and the feather footed one is a splash marans - not a brahma. Its hard to keep track of them.

They did have black and splash Breda, but I love blue lol. Yeah the splash Maran looks a lot like an young Isabel Brahma! That's what I thought it was and was seriously jealous :)

I just checked out that H & H place to see if they were close enough for a road trip. 4 hours is a bit far for us...lol. I really want to add some French standard BCMs, though.

My husband drives for Airgas and makes deliveries down that way from time to time. I wonder if he might be able to pick up a few chicks....

when your blues lay you will get 25% black 50% blue and 25% splash.

That would be so cool, except my neighbors would be so mad if I had a LF Roo :(
As it is I have a bantam cochin that makes more of a low soft growling kind of crow, and he has to stay locked in the coop until 9am. That's why I don't own Isabel Brahmas. They are so much money and I can't have to Roo to breed with to produce more. I've gotten lucky with my silkie Roos and so far none crow, but if they do and if its too loud we have to keep the peace and get rid of them :(

The quail are hatching, the quail are hatching.

We have Jumbo and Standard Pharoah as well as white Texas A&M Coturnix.

Our first batch of quail suffered from me leaving Bernie with a styrobator and no experience. He found himself swinging on the adjustment controller all day. When they were doing the autopsy on day 20 there were 2 alive but Mrs Oz could not keep them that way. My poor wife was distraught. (btw, its our 18th wedding anniversary today and I love more with every day)

The second batch hatched 12. On day 3 I told Bernie to feed them the boiled infert turkey eggs just pulled from the bator. The ants invaded and killed 10. 2 quail left. Miraculously they were a breeding pair but after Bernie saved 12 eggs to try and hatch, the eggs disappeared! Something - lizards, geckos, snakes or rats ate them!! I told hem to just eat the eggs for now.

I am quite surprised with the jumbos as they were over 2 weeks old when set and 40+ of the 100 had pipped late on day 16 we have to wait. So far there are aprox 20 standards hatched and that many again pipped. The actual zip and hatch has been going on for 90 minutes only.
