Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

we ended up with 14 more
the owner didn't want to feed them all winter so she put a "you need them all price on them"
50 bucks which included 1 adult female 1 adult male & 12 unrelated ducklings (3 weeks old)
i figured i could just put them in with the older muscovies i already had.....wrong
the two 1/2 grown males that i had started to attack the babies
a couple of the babies ended up with bald bloody spots on their backs :(
so the youngsters are now in their own safe area till they get some size to them
& the bullies are in with the meat birds....they will go camping soon!!!
i found it odd that the aduly male left the babies alone
by doing so he earned his place in the breeding flock

we will be "swimming " in ducks come next year

I have found that scovies can be real meaners! An adult drake injured my very calm and docile 5yr old Welsummer roo. (hurt his back; took him like 3 months to be able to walk without falling over). Right now I have two girls in with some EE pullets; the girls goose the pullets and eat their feathers (yes they may need more protien, they are molting) I bought back a young son when my old drake commited suicide by jamming his beak into the chicken wire and proceeding to break his own neck. The two girls are giving that boy a beating even tho he is already twice their size. My old drake was also notorious for trying to tread the chickens

I hope every thing fared okay in the storm, waiting for an update on that as well. Good luck with the hatch and the storm.

As far as the storm goes, we are ok. We had torrential rain and power failures over the last two days but were well below the path of the super typhoon that is now heading towards Taiwan.

We have 30 chicks thus far, Banty Cochin, Cream Legbars, Marans, Leghorns and Salmon Favs

There are plenty of pippers.

Bernie's fever has gone - he has a cough but back on the job.

I will try and post pics of the hatch once its complete. I need to coordinate getting the memory card to town.

I am excited over the new chicks. We have blue and dark egg layers as well as lots of potential broodies. Come next spring, I am going to be putting 3 peafowl eggs under every cochin that wants to sit.
