Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

A few pics

Caprino and his girls

The Guineas - tagged male and female now

Part of the new garden with a "pal-pal" wind break made from woven coconut fronds

Orpingtons

Bernies house undergoing repairs - it will be come a warehouse once his new house is built.
Currently replacing the exterior skin and the bamboo "ding-dings" to stop the animals going under his house.
It will get a new coat of paint once complete.

These are local "Visaya" hens we are crossing with a Rhode Island Red. We will the cross offspring with a Leghorn and back to a local roo.

The SFH CCL, Breda, Andalusians. Banty Cochins and other assorted teenagers. Most breeds will need another go at importing them to bring numbers to viable.

Gineas

The buff orps and a BR roo

The reds

Jerseys

This is the "feed tree" nursery - around trees started from seed. Ipil-Ipil and Malunggay are both 22+% protein and could be 100% of goat and 50% of both poultry and pig feeds

The Wyandotte Roo

A busy weekend on the farm.

Mrs Oz decided to do a surprise trip to check up on things.

She took a trailer full of new trees including lots of Plumeria or Frangipani as well as a few fruit trees she came accross at a mall promotion.

While she was there Bernie and Alja filled 22x 100lb feed sacks with rice hulls and then 25 more with saw-dust. She then wend by the collection points and delivered the goods back to the farm.

The rice hulls are for bedding and the sawdust will become compostable mulch for the gardens.

Motza got her new yoke. She will be introduced to it over the next week or so.

Caprino seems to have done his job as the girls have exhibited signs of pregnancy but yesterday Feta had a spontaneous abortion. We gave her a prophylactic antibiotic and will let her have another go at getting pregnant in a few weeks.

The fence is progressing. The piggery will need to be started within 6 weeks or our pigs will outgrow their current accommadations.

Looking good Oz

I am curious pig, did you weigh one? and I would love to know heights too.... I have nothing to compare my brahma too, the little orphs I got local I sold and like I said Little :( He looks of nice size.
sorry for my delay in responding SS
started back to school & they have been loading me up like crazy with long homework assignments :)
my wife weighed that rooster & he came in at 9.5 lbs
here is the thing, he is not yet done growing, not even a year old yet

we had one of his brothers last week....yummy
plenty of meat for 2 or more meals (it's just the 2 of us here)
sort of like eating a small turkey

rite now we have 14 peeps in the bathroom tote brooder (using an "ohio brooder lamp" only 65 watts = less electric)
15 more eggs in the hatcher & more in the bator

only getting a few eggs a day but it's the middle of the winter after all
with high temps last week only reaching 10f

hatched out 3 game bird chicks out of a dozen that were shipped 1500 miles (will be used for an OZ style cross)
i can work with a 25% hatch on shipped eggs
might have been slightly higher if the weather was warmer
let them rest for a day after arriving
then set them up under the turner for 3 more days
then they joined the "normal eggs" up on the rack

OZ
i love the idea of planting the Ipil-Ipil and Malunggay
we are planning on having a garden out back just for our chickens (ours is on the side)
we still have squash & pumpkins up stairs that we are feeding off for their breakfast

take care
piggy

but no buff roo puts back my breeding program 6-9 months. i cant go on facebook and get a replacement roo. I have to locate eggs, wait till next trip, deal with importation, pray they hatch and wait till they reach sexual maturity.in the mean time I have to visualise the 300+ buff orp eggs laid that will become mutts or omlettes

i tend to hit hard and cover all bases after the carnage from last batch of quail.

can you take a huge buff roo in your carryon?
tell them the roo is a much loved family pet

we had 7 such roos in the coop
is said "had" we are thinning them on out
what wonderful meals they make after my wife gets at them
