Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Oh yuck. Knee injuries really are the worst. One can get around decently with a swollen elbow, but a knee really puts you out for a while.

Sounds like Dr. Oz' advice is right on the money. Pretty much what one with expertise in that area would've told him.

Does he have a history of joint issues? Or does he recall making a weird motion or doing something unusually strenuous? Hope it's nothing serious.

IT came on suddenly, but more as a niggle then got progressively worse.

No history of joint issues

No single triggering event.

Now, I have no medical experience whatsoever, but I am a master Googler and have been around accident prone family members a lot

"Swelling and tenderness at the front of the knee, combined with a profession that requires frequent kneeling, suggest prepatellar bursitis.

Non-septic prepatellar bursitis can be treated with rest, the application of ice to the affected area, and anti-inflammatory drugs, particularly ibuprofen. Elevation of the affected leg during rest may also expedite the recovery process.Severe cases may require fine-needle aspiration of the bursa fluid, sometimes coupled with cortisone injections. However, some studies have shown that steroid injections may not be an effective treatment option."

So basically, what he's already doing. It's one of those irritation injuries that just needs rest..

Gout would cause redness. Inflammation would too. Sudden onset arthritis sounds really unlikely, as he has no previous issues. And if he had injured it, he would likely have noticed.

Fingers crossed for Bernie! Knee injuries suck. My dear husband was out of work with a knee injury for a LONG time... but he fell at work and his leg went one way and he went the other way.. not a good thing to do as a big fellah. Nasty injury.... got a lovely 8 inch scar as a souvenir.

On a good note

We are hatching mutts. 12/16 hatched so far with more to come.

This will be our best hatch. A room dehumidifier running at 35% has made a world of difference. My bator room was never below 60%

We have 170 eggs in the bator including mostly mutts, but also a few purebred Brittish BBS Orps, Barred Rocks, BBS Jersey Giants and RIR

Sunday was a not so good day at the beach.

Bernie went to bed on Saturday with a painful knee and had trouble sleeping. On Sunday morning its hot, but not red, swollen and cannot weight bear on it.

I am not an expert on knees, but joint injuries give me some concern. I told him to rest for the next three days with his knee elevated, take Ibuprofen 800mg every 8 hours with food and ice packs.

My resident advanced practice nurse is unavailable to consult so If its remotely hot on Monday, I will send him to a doctor.
I am hopping that Bernie has no damage to his knee!

Scott

I have spent a few shifts in the ER and know minor diagnostics but also when to seek help. We are doing OK.

Mrs Oz is way better at this stuff but is unavailable.

I hate hospitals... I usually figure out if something is going to go away on it's own or if I will need to see a dr. Whenever I do go, it's something really stupid (Like.. Shingles, at 28 years old) or I end up being worse off after the fact. D'oh

Spent half the day in labor and delivery recently, convinced my appendix was giving me issues. They couldn't find anything.. told me to take Tylenol and rest. But, when it involves pregnancy, I rather waste my time than risk the kid's health. Burst appendix and pregnancy is not a good combo.

Bla bla bla.

You're doing the right thing. See if it gets better, if not, doc time.

I am so jelly of all your babies. I NEED new fluffy butts.

They should be hitting the store tomorrow here... so I hope to have some squeakers.

cryptic...

Personally I dont diaper chickens.

We used Costco or Huggies bought on Amazon Prime Subscription for our kids. Re-usables cause too much irritation unless you are prepared to change them constantly every hour

They stopped using diapers
