Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

I have decided I am going to have to make 3 new grow out coops that will be very basic

The walls will be woven coconut fronds - like the wind breaks. No raised floors and no need for egg boxes. They will be good for 2 years tops but I cant see myself needing them longer.

Our 4 current pig pens can be used as coops as well once we get the piggery done

By then I should have 8 breeds well established and 5 coops of chicks and layers. Surely that will suffice.....

I have found that I need 1 coop for every breed and one coop for mixed breed layer flock.

for me add "beef-like" muscovys to the lineup

with 9 females i should have little need to buy beef next winter

they should be hatching up a storm for me with a little luck

well bed time for me kids

take care all

Now if only we could find a way to get chickens to make bacon, we'd be set! (and I don't mean that turkey bacon stuff I see in stores)

Ok oz question for ya... I have my little EE hen in with my SQ rir roo, she's laying big beautiful green eggs with him, will I get a little olive egger from that cross?
You would think you would get some form of green from this but I have found when I cross my ee's with standard brown egg layers that I either get brown or blue. Cross blue egg layer with dark egg layers like a maran or a welsummer and you get olive.

HFR - Your little EE hen will lay big beautiful green eggs with whatever rooster she is with. Her egg color is set ,and was from the moment she started developing in the egg she hatched from. The rooster carries a gene that will affect the color of the eggs that his female offspring will lay.

I agree with Cayuse Ranch. Crossing your EE hen and RIR cock should produce hens that will lay blue/green, brown, or light moss colored eggs. If you want truely OLIVE colored eggs, you must cross a blue egg layer with a dark brown egg layer THEN cross that (resulting) hen back with a dark egg layer cock.

How's that? Clear as mud?
