Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

It's a beautiful day.

Chicken sorting this morning. I have to go from chicken math to reality math and see if I have a chance of having 200 hens that can lay by September.

I also need to find places to build two basic coops that can house about 100 layers each. They will be about 350 sq feet of coop and then 700 sq feet of run.

I have given my father in law several hardwood trees over the years so I hit him up for three coconut trees that are no longer producing.

I will have to buy 20 eucalyptus logs for the posts. Coco lumber does not last if placed in the groung.

I also need about 40 lengths of bamboo and 100 meters of fishing net.

I will put 20 egg boxes per coop.

Dondon was introduced to the chickens this morning.

With a bit of luck we will also be inseminating our second batch of gilts in two weeks.

I only have 4 work days before I leave.

This is no small feat! Just to pay for feed alone is a big thing in my way of thinking. And then to break even on the whole operation is even better!

From there there is this mystical word to be had, called PROFIT. A very elusive word in my line of work lol, as soon as I find some profit it somehow turns into spendings.......

Well done Oz, may Dondon be a fast learner and like to stay for some time.

My sales have surpassed my entire feed bill for poultry since I started. I am still very deep in the hole when it comes to eggs vaccines medications labor materials and other odds and ends.

If I get a couple of these 500 and 1000 chick orders I will be a little closer to even. Its still a long haul and I did not start this to break even so its rather strange.

Dondon is doing well. He has made it past lunch. He is earning about fifty percent more than he thought the deal is.

It will take six months of loyalty before I will consider bonuses though. I am generous but not going to give someone a chunk of money and then not have them come back the next week.

Yesterday was the perfect day to start the roof. Not a cloud in the sky. The crew did not show up.

They were ready to start at 530 this morning. There are every cloud in your old school geography books above us from status to nimbus.

Good luck with the roof re-do. Isn't that scheduling thing just the normal 3rd world way?

Yesterday they needed to work on a family member's roof that they couldn't leave if the weather turned sour.

You can get Gouda at pretty much any grocery store. Aldi's carries it too. Borden makes a decent US made Gouda.. not sure why it's still Gouda at that point.. but hey. *laugh* (Dutch cheese is named after the city it's made in)



A lot of the Dutch folks in the US that I know get care packages or order Dutch specialties. It's nuts. There's nothing I miss THAT bad. And a lot of stuff you can get at grocery stores in the US if you look closely. Or world stores, they have those all over the US too *shrug*
There are so many dutch people around where I live in Ontario that every large town has some kind of dutch import store/bakery.



Smarties in the US are little sugar tablets. Smarties in Europe are little chocolate candies like m&ms only slightly sweeter with a thinner sugar shell in pastel colors.
We have the same smarties in Canada. What the US call smarties we call rockets

Dutch love salty licorice, salmiak etc. I don't care either way. It's all candy. US chocolate can be a bit rough, tastes like parafin wax to me. Hooray for Aldi... lots of good imported chocolate.




What about you OZ? Do you find you miss foods from Australia? Or is there things you just HAVE to have and bring to the phils? Marmite/Veggiemite?
