money And a working cattle operation Butchering alone is expensive. In California has to be done by a commercial butcher the ones that come to you and process on your property then haul the meat off to chill for three days before butchering... If I were capable and had the equipment it could be done at home. But just like chickens its not cheaper to do it yourself.... only better.

But I am a one woman operation. keeping the meat on the Hoof... um er flipper is a better deal. I will be on a fixed income by then.

what we do is we use on old bbq grill out behind the house

that i converted to run off free scrap wood

1st cook said duck in a large pot filled with water for a couple hours

no need for a huge fire just a steady fire

after a couple hours the meat is falling off of the bone

this is a good thing

the water once cooled is a nice treat for any chickens you may have at your place

the bones too can be added

not much left to eat but it does give the flock something to do (they will pick em clean)

you can freeze 1/2 of the meat if it's just you

the rest can make all sorts of tasty dishes

i found that muscovy ducks grow out much faster than say a RiR or buff orpington cockerel does

we processed some young males at 3 months old last fall & will be doing the same to about a dozen this year too

i hope to have hatching eggs from them next spring

Oz what does your turkey line-up look like at the moment?

Turkey was a disaster.

The new dehumidifier I bought was stronger. It heated the bator room to 104 while I was away for two days. Cooked everything.
