Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

The broody muccovy has the pekin eggs

Two broody hens have the muscovy eggs

A broody hen has the guinea eggs.

There is going to be some confused mammas in 26-35 days

We still have a brrody hen. we will give her the next batch of guinea eggs

I may call upon my friend Mok the duck man to set the next batch of pekins.

This will buy us time to get the white incubator finished so we can use the incubator built as a hatcher to incubate the Pekin eggs if they continue.

What kind of orders do you usually get?

Any and all.

Lots of requests for breeding trios which I can't fill because I dont have the stock nor the capacity to grow out that many birds.

The most common is 3-4 weeks olds - just off brooding lights. They are reasonably priced and most affordable to the beginner.

I have no problem selling excess adult roos - they snap them up. I start with day olds and keep selling until they are sold out. Normally by 8 weeks I am out of inventory altogether.

I just posted an article on FB on hatching Guineas - an adaptation of the one requested of me for the BYC learning center. Its had over 2,000 views on FB and despite saying I want to build my stock up first, I have people offering to pay to reserve.

I spent some good time developing FB and now its really paying off.

With enough stock, I could be shipping a lot of birds.

This week I am shipping 40 birds. Next week I have that many pre paid already

LOL

We are not quite there yet.

Its just nice to be operating in the black on a weekly basis - but it will be a long time until it breaks even.

If we can maintain our current sales, we should be at zero in about a year.

As all of you are aware, a lot can happen between now and then. I am going to have to look at bringing in more help before too long.I also need to expand the egg house. Both things that I have reluctance to do.

The Filipino school year finished in about 6 weeks. At that time Ariel wll be more available and it will allow some needed projects but I am not sure its enough.

Dodong is doing a good job. He does not have the finess of a focussed Bernie but Bernie lacked focus from about three weeks into his short return.

I need to look at somebody to oversee the place and keep it running on track. I also need somebody who can market the place at agricultural fairs and exhibitions.

Finding those people will be tough
