Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

No

They would not let them in the cabin.

There are people who endure a 6 hour bus ride because they want our birds. It would be nice to capture the market for those that dont

How are things moved between the smaller islands?
My DS lives in SE Alaska - lots of islands and water. Barges for big things and float planes for people, mail, and packages. He worked in the office of one of the companies that fly the planes and said lots of chicks would go through the office.

Maybe that would be an option?

there are plenty of options for cargo. There is an amazingly extensive network of ferries and pump boats to get from island to island. distances across the water are not far. the problem for live birds is that companies wont take on the liability. The package companies wont accept them. The big bus line on our routes stopped recently so the only option is airport to airport

Thanks,
I have been following the thread for a while, just never posted. It is amazing what Oz has accomplished. I love learning how people get what they want to do done.

Question for the group. My older birds (3 years) are having a rough molt this winter. May still have naked backs and bottoms. I'm due to restock feed and was wondering what the consensus is on using a high protein feed for this time of year and to grow feathers back. I also have a bunch of younger birds that haven't molted yet that would get this feed. Any thoughts?

I have found that a single bag of turkey food gives them a boost when moulting. It will also reduce feather picking if protein is needed.

Hey Oz - got 5 legbar eggs yesterday!!

They had stopped laying for a while after Racoons ripped the wire off from an edge of the coop (literally). Lost 4 hens :( , 2 of whom had only just started laying.
